Now in its twelfth year, The Caine Prize for African Writing is Africa's leading literary prize, and is awarded to a short story by an African writer published in English, whether in Africa or elsewhere. This collection contains this winning story and the other four 2011 shortlisted stories, along with stories written at the Caine Prize Writers’ Workshop, which took place in Cameroon in April 2011.

126 qualifying stories were submitted from 17 African countries and the panel, chaired by award-winning Libyan novelist Hisham Matar, have announced the following 5 authors for the shortlist:
