Arlington West

Peter Dudar and Sally Marr

"I couldn't speak for an hour after watching it."
-East LA High School Student

This film's power stems from two elements: first, are interviews with 64 GI's coming or going to war, military families who have lost a child in Iraq and veterans; second, is "Arlington West," a weekly project of Veterans for Peace in which white wooden crosses are placed in the sand at Santa Monica and Santa Barbara beaches. There is a cross for each US soldier killed in Iraq – 1,450 as of 2/7/05. A sign notes there are over 10,000 GI's wounded and at least 100,000 Iraqis killed. Thousands visit the memorial each week, many placing the names of lost loved ones on the crosses along with mementos and flowers. Within this scene of remembrance and somber resistance the interviews take place. The film is being shown to high school students all over California and we urge high school teachers across the US to do the same. It gives young people the truth about this war and counters recruiters' deceitful pitch. A curriculum developed by LA high school teachers comes with each DVD. 56 minutes.
