1961 Freedom Riders

Actual Mississippi mugshots of the 328 courageous, mostly young African Americans and whites who helped change the course of the Civil Rights Movement. The protesters faced fire bombing of their bus, brutal beatings and imprisonment in Mississippi's infamous state penitentiary. The second side contains photographs, interviews and quotes of Riders 40+ years later, plus an alphabetical listing of all Riders cross-referenced to the mugshots which are arranged chronologically on side one. The mugshots were all taken by the Jackson, MS police department so the earliest Riders, who didn’t make it to Jackson, are not shown. However, they are included in the alpha listing on side two.
