Audre Lorde

A self-described “black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet,” Audre Lorde (1934-1992) dedicated both her life and her creative talent to confronting and addressing injustices of racism, sexism, classism and homophobia. An activist, teacher, cancer survivor, she is the author of 17 books of prose and poetry. In 1981, along with fellow writers Cherríe Moraga and Barbara Smith, she co-founded Kitchen Table: Women of Color Press. Audre articulated early on the intersections of race, class, and gender in canonical essays such as “The Master’s Tools Will Not Dismantle the Master’s House.”
