Ricardo Levins Morales ©2005
Harry (1901-1990) was the incorruptible founder, in 1932, of the ILWU (International Longshoremen’s & Warehousemen’s Union) on the West Coast. Despite a 20-year campaign by J. Edgar Hoover to deport him, Harry forged one of the most progressive and democratic unions in the US. The ILWU was among the first unions to oppose the Viet Nam war and has regularly opposed, through slowdowns and stoppages, other illegal US wars.
