Resist ICE Brutality – Speak for Justice
Yesterday, in Syracuse, over 1600 people marched to say "No" to ICE. It was a powerful gathering, Signs read, "Melt ICE, not families," "No ICE in Salt City," and "RESIST -- it feels better." The spirit in the crowd was determined – this is not who we are, it's not okay to shoot a woman in her car, it's not okay to go door to door without search warrants and pull people out of their houses to check their immigration status.
Across the country, protesters are demanding that we do better:
* Reinstitute democratic processes
* Support (not jail) immigrant families
* Reign in rogue vigilantes who spread lies and inflict damage (and death)
In Minneapolis, where Rene Nicole Good was brutally murdered, protesters sang a new song:
"This is for our neighbors who are locked inside. Together, we can abolish ICE."
For those of you who are already speaking up, stay strong. Bring a friend to the next rally, perhaps someone who hasn't yet gotten involved. Become actively involved in local organizations.
For those of you who are waiting for the "right moment" to do something – that moment is now. Together we are powerful. Fascism thrives on secrecy and isolation; collective power is the solution. And, as one marcher's sign said, "Resistance feels better!"
Put up a lawn sign, wear a button or T-shirt, start conversations (even uncomfortable ones) with the people you meet in the supermarket, at work, at your church or house of worship. Ask people, "What did you think about what happened in Minneapolis? Do you know what ICE is doing in our community? Do you have the HOTLINE number to call for ICE WATCH?
Audre Lorde said, "Your silence will not protect you." And, your silence won't protect your neighbors either.
These are scary times. Many of us are very frightened. But the best antidote to fear is action.
