Celebrating 42 Years of Publishing for Peace and Social Justice

Dear friends:

42 years ago, Dik Cool, Karen Kerney and Jack Manno decided to continue publishing the Peace Calendar which Dik had started 11 years earlier at the Syracuse Peace Council. Although there really isn't an actual “birthday,” Dik Cool, who loved celebrating birthdays, chose July 17.

This is our first anniversary without Dik, and we just sent the 2025 Peace Calendar to the printer, the first one in which Dik didn't play a major role (that's after 53 in which he was a guiding force). But we'd rather celebrate the critical work we continue to do, an approach which Dik would surely support, rather than feel melancholy.

We're very excited about the calendar and the datebook, which is also at the printer. And, we're gearing up with new products to support democracy  - in response to one of the few elections in our country's 248 year history in which a candidate who stands a strong chance of winning is likely to try to destroy what functioning democracy remains.

So, wherever you are, we hope you'll take a moment this week to celebrate the many contributions Syracuse Cultural Workers has made to movements for justice, peace and protecting Mother Earth. As it's long been a tradition to celebrate birthdays here at Syracuse Cultural Workers, we'll be celebrating our organizational birthday at our annual picnic on Friday.

In solidarity,

Andy Mager
SCW Coordinator
