$top Funding Endless War
Share
Trump recently announced plans to shift even more of our precious national resources away from meeting human needs into expanded warmaking. The call for a massive increase in the already bloated war budget is obscene. As macho US militarism grows, and exerts its power across the globe, this is the last thing we or the world need!
Next week is Tax Day in the United States, the deadline when individuals are instructed to file federal income tax returns. Nearly all of us (except for the small (but growing) number of war tax resisters or those wealthy enough to avoid paying their fair share of taxes) pay a vast sum to support the growing US War Machine.
Our friends at War Resisters League (WRL) project that 58% of Trump's proposed budget would go to war spending. Their annual flier (link above) which analyzes the federal budget is an invaluable resource. They remind us that Social Security and Medicare are Trust Funds – separate from the regular federal budget. Most other pie charts you'll see obscure the huge share of our money which supports militarism by wrongly including those funds in the budget.
Although the assault on Iran is temporarily paused, we have no confidence the US/Israeli assault is over. And the theft of resources from desperately needed social programs couldn't be more stark. The growing movement for democracy has thus far done a better job of addressing the need to maintain funding for social programs, infrastructure, research, education, etc. than it has in calling for a fundamental shift in our nation's relationship to the rest of the world, including deep cuts in the Pentagon budget. This recent analysis by Robert Borosage in The Nation is useful.
While war tax resistance is a difficult and risky (though extremely worthwhile) undertaking for most people, there are things we can all do to advocate for reduced war spending and increased spending on social needs. Contact your Congressional representatives through this simple online tool to say No More Funding for War.
