Art is not a mirror held up to reality, but a hammer with which to shape it. ~ Bertolt Brecht (1898–1956) was a German playwright and poet. A committed Marxist, he fled Nazi persecution in 1933. In 1947, facing investigation and hostility in the United States for his communist views, he left the country and spent his final years in East Berlin.
