Ben Franklin (1706-1790) was a leading colonial statesman, abolitionist, inventor, philanthropist and revolutionary thinker. He served on the committees that drafted the Declaration of Independence (adopted July 4, 1776) and the Constitution of the USA (ratified June 21, 1788). Franklin was also one of the colonial leaders who believed that they had a great deal to learn from the Haudenosaunee Confederacy in creating the US government.
