This early precursor to "Critical Mass" bike rides is from the 1940s in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn. Photographer Joe Schwartz (1913-2013) sought to capture the dignity of marginalized people while highlighting inter-racial cooperation and understanding in his photos.
