More people are awakening to the historical horrors of “Indian Boarding Schools,” one part of the centuries-long effort to eliminate the original peoples of this land. The discoveries of mass graves of children at such schools in Canada and the US has taught others of us what Indigenous People already knew about this deadly legacy of colonization. As Oren Lyon's notes, it did not succeed.
On Back:
Boarding schools were designed to “Kill the Indian and save the man.” Our languages were taken, in some cases destroyed. Our cultures and spiritual practices were assaulted for generations.
Well, they did not succeed. We are still here.
